Impulse vs. Alignment
Learning to recognize the difference between emotional shopping and personal clarity to build a wardrobe with longevity
A few months ago, a reader reached out for advice on making a purchase when, despite our best planning, there is a possibility the item in question won’t be the thing we repeatedly reach for and love to wear. It’s the million dollar shopping question, really. And my answer back to her has been on my mind ever since.
I essentially said:
Take a pause and do some legwork before buying.
Track your purchases over a few months and try to identify themes in what didn’t work out.
Be nice to yourself, shopping isn’t easy.
But I have more to say! And this is the string I’ve been pulling:
When we’re about to buy something, how do we know if we’re being driven by impulse, or alignment? And how does identifying the difference help to cut back on items we regret and instead build a well-edited closet with longevity1? I have some thoughts, so let’s dig in!
