We love real outfits!!!!!! My biggest gripe with getting dressed for work is the lack of space for accessories, but you do such a great job of bringing texture and layers to your outfits Emily! I'm def going to try the belt over blazer trick, so smart. Also obsessed with the styling of that Marni dress - so chic.
The belt over a crossed over blazer is my new obsession!!! Like.. I think I can stretch one black blazer for so many different occasions by just adding a few more belts to my wardrobe. Belt and earrings! and cheers to you, our resident real work outfit QUEEN 👸🏼!!!
lol well I ALSO loved my Grady maiden name, I legally changed it to my second middle name. So my full name is Emily Ann Grady Dodge. I’m so happy I did it, even though it was a pain in the ass.
I’m so glad I did it, but it was a lot of steps! It’s been 8 years so I’m rusty, but I do remember it varies from state to state. I lived in NY at that time and I found a blog post from someone in NY who had figured it out and then I followed her exact steps. I had to first change my passport, then my drivers license, THEN with those two documents I could legally change it. I remember the other way was to publish in a NEWSPAPER that you were changing your name, and that would count as valid proof. Isn’t that wild? But in other states, you could literally go to town hall and change your name to anything in the world if you wanted to. I would Google it and make sure you’re looking at your state laws!
Love the pleated skirt belted blazer outfit. Have screen shot for inspiration later. All of the items on there own are relatively basic and classic but the outfits when they are paired together are 🔥 really highlights how versitile high quality basics are
Thank you, Kendal! Totally, I’m a big believer in building blocks and appreciating what I have. And secondhand to get the highest quality I can afford! Thank you for reading!!! Xo
Emily, your outfits are v minimalist chic and if I saw you walking down the street I would stop you to say that I love what you're wearing. Your new bio is so clever - whenever I think full length mirror, I think of you now :) I look forward to your outfit selfies!
Thank you so much, I mean, I’m obsessed with your style and every outfit pic you post too! You’ve def brought Ganni back to the forefront of my mind. I saw a girl walking her dog yesterday and she had the COOLEST coat on, and I told her I loved it and she immediately was so warm and friendly and told me where it was from without me even asking and I wanted to tell her she should start a substack and be friends with all of us haha. I feel like if I saw you on the street we would DEFINITELY strike up a conversation!
The only problem with this post is that you're TOO DAMN CHIC! I want to buy everything now. So fun. And actually, I would never have known there was any self-consciousness until the end, I actually appreciate that section in particular, because I certainly feel self-conscious when I post my outfits. Your outfits reflect real-life, a considered approach to building a wardrobe, and using what you have vs rushing to repurchase. SO GOOD as always!
I wonder if anyone does NOT feel self conscious, at least a little bit, posting outfit pics. It seems like it’s a natural feeling! Thank you for the kind words, it means a lot! I love your style and your approach as well. I’m so excited every time you post and I’m loving your podcast too!!! You have a very calming voice and sound so self assured. ❤️💕 Happy Valentine’s Day!
First off, I want to say I loved reading about what you wear to different events in your life. Secondly, I want you to know that you do not need to be an expert to have an opinion and talk about it!! I wrote primarily about style as well and I am by no means an expert. Just a person with an opinion who likes to write about it. I am clearly biased, but I love reading how you pair things together. TLDR - do not discount your knowledge!!
Also! I own the Mija belt by Dehanche in Chocolate Croc and I LOVE it. I own a few others and I'm equally obsessed! The quality is really great. It's one of my most worn belts. I know they do a few sales a year, so definitely keep your eyes out for it :)
Lastly, I've been into snake print as well. I can't get St Agni's Mira heel their python print out of my head!!
Thank you for the pep talk!!! I guess I just feel self conscious but it’s silly and I need to get over it. You are SO right about not discounting personal knowledge. Just two years ago, I had no clue what to wear to work from home, or how many “zoom tops” I would need, etc. it’s easy to feel like “everyone knows this” but someone else might see this who is a few years younger than me and be like, oh! Ok, it’s normal to just have five workhorse shirts. That’s fine!
GOOD to know re: the Dehanche belts!! I really love the size of this one, it’s not too skinny, not too much, delicate buckle, etc.
I really appreciate that you show how many great outfits you can made with a realitive limited number of pieces. The outfits themselves are realistic and also very stylish - definitely worth sharing! I guess we all become insecure about what to share -is it too basic etc. What I love about Substack is that you see real people in different stages of their style journey. We don't allhave to be super fashion forward.
The outfits felt like something you could wear in a lot of work environments. I especially loved the outfit with the pleated skirt.
Thank you, Sigrid!! Oh gosh, I know- sharing on the internet feels so odd when I’m just a “regular” person and not living this uber glamorous life or something. But, I LOVE seeing other people sharing fashion, thoughts on fashion, so you know.. why not throw my hat in the ring too? Life is short!!
Emily I love all these looks. They feel SO you. I’m so inspired by your journey on finding thoughtful items and how you spend so much time being strategic on what to purchase and how you’d wear & style them. Re the expert portion of this — something about writing on substack feels very freeing and a collection of people’s personal experiences to learn from!
Bridget! Thank you ❤️ You always looked so pulled together when we worked together so you were a huge influence on me wanting to figure this out and create a work capsule I felt like “me” in. I’m so happy you’re sharing here too, I love your style and approach! 💕💕
I loved this, Emily! How did I miss this before?? Your outfits are amazing, and I’m pulling so much inspo from you. I have a similar shaped pair of black pants that I am so bad at styling, but love who you’ve worn yours here!! Also did not know about getting zapped, very intriguing, and your job sounds so fun. I love interiors! Especially hotels and other third spaces, especially in NYC!! xoxo
Thank you!! I wore those black pants yesterday to the trade show I’m at and I felt so good all day - they’re magical haha. I would love to see how you end up styling yours!
I really loved this post and all the outfit inspo! It's always so refreshing to see someone use their clothes and rewear outfits.
Keep doing what you're doing because it's so valuable. It's hard to put yourself out there, especially when it comes to something as personal as how you dress daily.
Thank you so much for saying that- it’s been freeing for me to share here, and to claim that I do love clothes and getting dressed even though I don’t always nail it, and even though I still make purchases I end up regretting. For a long time, those things made me feel like, I’m not very fashionable. But I think it’s a relatable struggle! And I feel like I’ve sort of arrived at a place where I have a higher batting average with new purchases. Thank you for being here!
But Emily- you ARE an expert. You have your own unique take and spin on digesting fashion and getting dressed in a way that makes sense for your life - which btw is like 95% of the rest of the world. I loved this glimpse into a normal week of looks bc IT’S REAL and relatable. Your voice matters just as much as anyone else’s!! Thank you for contributing - that’s the most important bit!! 🩷
These are very very good points! Are you familiar with Jenna Kutcher? I used to listen to her podcast ages ago and then fell off when I realized self help was very… repetitive.. no shade, but I think we can all agree on that to some extent. Anyways!! One thing she said did always stick with me, and that’s if you are one step ahead of someone, you are an expert to that person. It’s all relative and we need to be more rooted in our own earned knowledge and experiences. That was all very random but your comment really got me thinking! Thank you for being here!!!
This was such a satisfying read…I love reading through your day, and the different needs of your days, and how you change clothes to meet those needs. This feels so relatable! I also just adore all these outfits and fully appreciate that I could buy a few of these pieces myself…good, quality separates do not need to cost a mortgage payment. You are doing this entire substack writing thing justice, keep doing just what you’re doing. Also I’m jealous of your photos bc they look so polished. Le sigh.
Thank you so much! Part of why I started this substack over a year ago was because I wanted to find more relatable (to me.. it’s all relative) fashion content. The people who have a budget, and wear things for years, etc. Then I thought, if I want to read more of that, I should participate and make what I want to read. So I’m glad this intent is coming across!
That was my same motivation! I kept seeing memes like “if you don’t see what you want out there, create it!” And so I did. It’s a learning curve for sure, but it’s been such a relief valve, not just the writing, but the finding of community.
Woooooooo so so so good. You are a sharp dresser my friend! I mean on the one hand, ya duh- it’s a fashion Substack 🤪 but I love how everything is so crisp and sophisticated but with personalityyyyy. More outfit photos please!!
I have been asked before to share my outfits and when I think about it I just feel deeply self-conscious that all my outfits would disappoint. I think it’s a common feeling because we are used to looking at our clothes every day. But I see the outfits you put on and I am like “DAYUM she looks amazing.” I loved each and every outfit.

A queen of a real-outfit that is also straight chic 👑
P.S. Is Grady your married or maiden name… if maiden, I wonder if we’re distantly related 🤔
MY MAIDEN. I still haven't changed it and my husband is getting a bit annoyed with me. Who knew I was so attached but it's a great last name :)
lol well I ALSO loved my Grady maiden name, I legally changed it to my second middle name. So my full name is Emily Ann Grady Dodge. I’m so happy I did it, even though it was a pain in the ass.
Tips for changing my name! I also plan to change my maiden to middle.

I love that so much! I’m a big believer in telling people if you love their style and a big yes to more fashion Substackers.

Absolutely share-worthy! Such good finds from TRR too
Thank you!!! I’d be lost without TRR!

Came back to this post after the Midimalist chat to soak in your chic outfits and the no-socks-and-jeans rule.
Hahhaha NEVER wear socks with jeans … never. 😂😂😂😂
Love these looks!!
Thank you!!

I love EVERY outfit you share! It’s so true, we’re bored of ourselves haha. Please share and never worry that it would disappoint! I promise it wont!!
